Who we are

City and Country School is an independent school in the West Village serving children ages 2 through 8th grade. Founded in 1914 by pioneering educator Caroline Pratt, C&C is widely recognized as the birthplace of progressive education. Known for its dynamic programming that disrupted rote-based systems of education, C&C's modern progressive model is more relevant today than ever.

Housed in seven landmarked brownstones, our campus boasts four outdoor yards, a sun-filled art studio, a science lab, a stunning movement room, and a library featuring more than 29,000 titles. It’s a vibrant and intentional place, where students navigate the historic campus with confidence and purpose.

Our approach to progressive education is layered, well-planned, rigorous, and rooted in experience. In addition to building a firm academic foundation in math, science, reading, and writing, children at C&C cultivate unmistakable strengths in critical thinking, curiosity, and social responsibility. Students in the nursery 2s through 2nd grade use Pratt’s famous invention–wooden unit blocks–to inspire innovation, collaboration, and meaningful connections with the world around them. In the 3rd through 8th grades, Pratt’s Jobs Program calls on children to take part in the running of the school. By writing the school newspaper or managing the school supply store, students build a lasting sense of responsibility and leadership and a deeper understanding of how communities work and support one another.

C&C is ideal for students and families who value questioning, trial and error, ingenuity, and inclusivity. Our students proudly take ownership of their learning and embrace their futures with courage and conviction. Our graduates attend a wide range of competitive high schools and stand out among their peers as natural leaders and bold thinkers.

Conveniently located near the 14th Street hub of public transportation, C&C is easily reached from all parts of New York City.
