Who we are
Thank you for your interest in The Schenck School!
The mission of The Schenck School is to build a solid educational foundation for students with dyslexia and develop their rich potential. Founded in 1959, we have been delivering on this promise for more than 65 years.
Schenck enrolls 250 students across Kindergarten through sixth grade. Classes are small, with an average student-teacher ratio of 5:1. Most students stay at Schenck for two or three years before transitioning to a mainstream school.
Research shows that students with dyslexia learn best with intensive phonics and phonemic awareness instruction. Our teachers, experts in the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach, provide this support every day through The Schenck School Reading Model, a comprehensive, evidence-based reading education method with O-G at its core. We also provide robust math instruction, guided by The Schenck School Math Model. Daily, our teachers pull together language, reasoning, and explicit instruction to help students reach their full potential.
In addition to an academic curriculum of phonics, vocabulary, fluency, reading comprehension, written expression, grammar, math, social studies, and science, students take specials that include art, music, library, and physical education. Technology is incorporated into many subjects each day.
Students at Schenck work hard and also have fun. A key part of school life is the House System, which brings together students, faculty, and staff from all grade levels to develop leadership and teamwork while cultivating a strong sense of community. Everyone is sorted into four houses, and points are awarded to students who display good character, citizenship, and resilience.
The Schenck School provides in-house occupational therapy and speech and language therapy services to our students as needed.
After school, students can join Homework Lab, Phoenix Fun activities, or Aftercare.
