The Hatch School

Hi, and welcome! The Hatch School is a new high school in Seattle focusing on the experiences of adolescent girls - we welcomed our first class of 9th graders in the fall of 2022. We’re on a mission to unleash the brilliance, compassion, and voices of young women by cultivating their academic and personal power, and we're excited that you might be part of HATCH's origin story - we can't wait to get to know you.

At HATCH, we believe learning is both personal and relational. We know that the most learning happens when students are fully seen, cared for, and connected to their community. HATCH students embrace dualities believing: a school can have high expectations and provide high support; it’s possible to prioritize both excellence and balance; people can simultaneously harness their personal agency while also building intentional community; and a school can create structure while offering flexibility.

Why we started HATCH

We founded The Hatch School because, as teachers, we were seeing students who were overwhelmed by the onslaught of others’ demands, who never had the time to step back and reflect on what they really wanted and how they were going to make their goals happen. We were seeing an epidemic of anxiety and self doubt rising among students, especially among girls and students whose gender or sexual identities have been historically marginalized. We were seeing students who were exhausted by microaggressions and the code-switching needed to get through one day (never mind four years!) in school. While many schools want to change this, their established structures make it all but impossible. 

So we decided to start fresh - to Change the Game, Not the Girl.
